Workshop Summary Report - Best Practices - Treatment and Rehabilitation for Seniors with Substance Use Problems, March 6 and 7, 2003

Introduction

On March 6 and 7, 2003, a workshop was held to further disseminate the research and knowledge from the document "Best Practices - Treatment and Rehabilitation for Seniors with Substance Use Problems". The workshop was sponsored by the Office of Demand Reduction, Drug Strategy and Controlled Substances Programme of Health Canada and is part of Health Canada's efforts to strenghten approaches to treatment and rehabilitation for Canadians with substances use problems.

This workshop was attended by 36 professionals from across Canada, who work with seniors with substance use problems.

Participants were welcomed by Cathy Airth, Acting Director of the Office of Demand Reduction. Ms. Airth encouraged the participants to use the next two days to network and exchange information on issues pertaining to the best practices and to identify how best to apply the best practices to respective provincial/territorial treatment and rehabilitation programs and services for seniors.

The Workshop Report provides a synopsis of the presentations, discussions and issues raised during the two-day event.
