Seized Drug Exhibit Submissions

Introduction

The primary role of the Drug Analysis Service (DAS) is to analyze, identify, and in some cases, determine the purity of drugs seized by law enforcement agencies. Each year DAS laboratories receive over 110,000 drug samples that are often used as evidence in Canadian courts cases.

In carrying out DAS's mandate, DAS laboratory personnel from across Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver) provide support to law enforcement agencies by:

  • assisting law enforcement agencies in the safe shutdown of clandestine laboratories and ensuring that exhibits relevant to the case are chosen for analysis;
  • offering advice to Canadian police agencies on the types of drugs that may be produced in clandestine laboratories;
  • assisting on-site sampling;
  • providing a Certificate of Analyst upon completion of the analyses that can be utilized in court; and
  • providing expert advice and training to police officers on the sampling of illicit drug seizures as well as on health and safety issues that may arise when dismantling clandestine laboratories.

To ensure that efficient and effective service is provided to law enforcement agencies, particularly when the services of a DAS specialist are required at the site of a clandestine laboratory, it is important to involve DAS specialists at the earliest stages of the investigation. By contacting the manager of the laboratory servicing your region or conctating a laboratory specialist as early as possible, this will increase the probability that the needs of the requesting agency can be met.
