Are you concerned about a friend or family member who smokes? It important to realize that not all people are ready to stop smoking. They may be aware of many of the health risks, so reminding them of what smoking is doing to their body may not help. In fact, sometimes it can worsen the situation. They may get angry at you or tune you out. Worse yet, when they do show some interest in quitting they may not ask for your help because they think you are judging them.

Here are some ideas on how to talk with a friend or family member who smokes:
Start by saying that you realize that ultimately, it is their decision whether to continue smoking or quit. However, tell them that you are concerned about them. Emphasize that you will support them regardless of whether they choose to continue smoking or not. Tell them you are willing to help them if they ever decide to try to stop smoking.
Ask if they would be willing to talk about their smoking. If they say no, respect their position. If they say yes, be prepared to listen. Never preach or lecture. Ask open ended questions and then let them answer. For example, ask why they smoke. Ask if they have ever thought about quitting. If they say yes, gently ask what their concerns are about quitting. Finally ask if there is anything you can do to help. Thank them for being open with you.
