Health Care Policy Contribution Program - 2010-2011 Annual Report

The Health Care Policy Contribution Program (HCPCP) is made up of three components:

• the Health Human Resource Strategy (HHRS),
• the Internationally Educated Health Professionals Initiative (IEHPI) and
• the Health Care System Innovation Fund (HCSIF).

Through the HCPCP, the Government of Canada responds to emerging health policy priorities, establishes collaborative working arrangements with provincial and territorial governments to effect change on a pan-Canadian scale, and supports organizations with specifically related expertise to help achieve health policy goals.

Health Canada funded the projects summarized in this report through contribution agreements with recipients--including non-profit and non-governmental organizations, professional associations, educational institutions, and provincial, territorial and local governments--in order to develop, implement and disseminate knowledge, best practices and strategies for innovative health care delivery.

This year's Annual Report showcases a variety of projects, such as:

• the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation's work to develop a national model of care for total hip and knee replacement;
• the Province of British Columbia's initiative to increase the number of family medicine residents providing care to patients in underserved communities;
• the Province of Quebec's support of internationally educated health professionals;
• the University of Alberta's work to train health care providers to improve safety and the quality of care in nursing homes;
• the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing's initiative to develop bridging programs for internationally educated nurses;
• the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation's research to explore issues in health care renewal; and
• the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association's initiative to build awareness among Canadian seniors of hospice palliative and end-of-life care. 

All project summaries include a description of the project, funding amounts, duration, recipient, and results. For projects that terminated in 2010-11, final results and outcomes are provided, whereas for those that continue into future years, project activities and expected results are highlighted.
