Health Infostructure Support Program
In 1998, statistics show that there were 19,300 new cases of breast cancer and 5,300 deaths among Canadian women, as a result of breast cancer. According to the 1990 Canadian Health Population Survey only 55% of Canadian women have had a mammogram and only 40% report having had one within two years of being surveyed. Similar statistics exist for cervical and ovarian cancers. The best results in reducing morbidity and mortality from all types of cancer have been in countries and/or communities where there is an organized approach to screening and where a high proportion of eligible women have been screened.
The project is designed to improve the computer database and linkages between mammography and other gynecological services in Nova Scotia, by creating one centralized mammography booking service. The centralized booking service would also document breast screening trends, and initiate a data compatibility format between cancer screening related services.
