Project: An Integrated Public Health Surveillance Project

Health Infostructure Support Program

Background

The Health Information System (HIS) is a funded project being implemented via the Internet by Medical Services Branch, Health Canada. HIS will address the public health needs of Aboriginals, specifically those bands that are considering a transfer of authority over services. The Public Health Information System (PHIS) is being implemented by the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control Society (BCCDCS) among the Health Authorities in B.C. The PHIS addresses communicable disease management, adverse reactions, and immunized record tracking. The Canadian Integrated Public Health Surveillance (CIPHS) is a Laboratory Centre for Disease Control project oriented toward linking laboratory and risk factor data on reportable diseases on a national basis.

Project Description

The primary objective of this project will be to take advantage of current Internet and integration technologies to link a suite of surveillance initiatives. The linking of HIS, PHIS and CIPHS will enable effective, timely sharing of surveillance products. A key deliverable will be an outbreak model.

Project Funding under HISP: $499,800.00
