Health Infostructure Support Program
Injuries are the fourth leading cause of death for all ages combined and the leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 45. About 220,000 Canadians are admitted to hospitals every year for the treatment of injuries. Every year 6,500 injury victims die in hospital and a further 6,500 die before they reach the hospital. Canadian trauma patients use two million hospital days every year. The total direct and indirect costs to the health care system from injuries exceeds $14 billion per year, representing 11% of the total cost of health care.
The purpose of the project is to create an interactive computer based network that will facilitate the evaluation of trauma care in Canada. The project's objectives are:
1. the creation of an integrated Canadian Trauma Registry;
2. the development of the algorithms and computer programs that will allow the exchange of data between the Integrated Canadian Registry and users of the network;
3. the development of the algorithms and computer programs that will conduct the required statistical analyses; and
4. the development of the Internet web site.
