Health Infostructure Support Program
Cardiovascular disease is Canada's number one cause of death and disability. It has a significant socioeconomic impact on both the health care system and society as a whole. Legislators and policy makers need information in order to make informed decisions about resource allocation; clinicians need information to support decisions on treatment options; administrators about waiting list management; industry about drug trends and medical devices; and the public about quality of life.
The objective of the project is the development of a Cardiovascular Database that includes Revascularisation data and Adult Congenital Heart Disease data. The database will be accessible through the Internet both for the extraction and input of data. The 18-month project will involve inputs on policy, database technology development and connectivity, as well as systems development from experts. The database will be evaluated at test centres in Ottawa, Quebec City, Toronto and Edmonton. Following the evaluation of the pilot project all fifty cardiac centres in Canada will be linked to the database. The web site address is www.cancvdata.ca.
