Health Infostructure Support Program
The Keeweetinok Lakes Regional Health Authority is one of seventeen health authorities in Alberta with responsibility for planning and delivering services for its residents. The region is located northwest of Edmonton, and serves 25,000 residents. The largely rural, culturally diverse and sparse population presents some challenges to health service delivery. The Keeweetinok Lakes Regional Health Authority's Teleradiology Project aims to fulfil two purposes: to bring a needed service into the region; and, to evaluate Teleradiology services, specifically ultrasounds, for future systems in Canada.
The project will establish a satellite communications link between the High Prairie region and hospitals and research centres in Edmonton and Calgary. The link will enable real time ultrasound examinations where the patient is in High Prairie or Slave Lake and the radiologist is in Edmonton or Calgary. The ultrasound equipment will be portable, for use in both High Prairie and Slave Lake health complexes. The system will provide real time audio, video, image and data capture, storage, management and transmission capabilities. Successful completion of the project will set the stage for further developments in the fields of Telehealth and Teleradiology including transmission of digitized x-rays to enable distance diagnosis of more complex health problems.
