Project: Personalized On-Line Multi-Media Training/Information for Diabetics

Health Infostructure Support Program

Background

There are over 1.4 million diabetics in Canada and an estimated 240,000 in Quebec. In addition, there are approximately 500,000 undiagnosed cases in Canada. The disease is a major medical health care problem with patients suffering many medical complications. As a result, diabetics in general make extensive use of medical and health care resources. If the disease continues to evolve at its current rate, diabetes will remain one of the leading causes of death in Canada.

Project Description

The project will develop a personalized multi-media training and on-line information network to support an integrated health care approach, to help diabetics to become more informed and self-reliant. The network will be accessible to patients, health care providers, physicians, pharmacists, nurses and dietitians. Development of the content will be preceded by definition of key factors for programming personalized information/training for patients and health care providers. The network will allow an integration of a global medical services approach with a global training/information approach in the field of health care.
