Health Infostructure Support Program
Until 1995 Newfoundland and Labrador did not have medical oncology services and, as a result, some patients often sought consultation and treatment outside the province. The situation has changed with the recruitment of a number medical oncologists to provide services across the province. A systemic therapy program is essential for the most judicious use of these limited resources for the delivery of these medical oncology services.
The project will create a network which will link hospital pharmacies, clinics, and health care services throughout Newfoundland and Labrador with a central data base containing systemic therapy standards and clinical trial protocols. Specifically, the project will link the NF Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation with the eight health regions for consultative physician clinics, chemotherapy services, and support services. The goal is to optimize patients' survival and quality of life by providing treatment and support services as close to the patient's home as possible.
