Health Infostructure Support Program
The Ontario Cancer Registry is the largest patient-specific cancer registry in Canada. The prospect of on-line access to patient records is important and necessary for the delivery of high quality health care services. Concerns over the timeliness, accuracy, completeness and efficiency in obtaining pathologic information on individuals to permit rapid case assessment have focussed the need for high performance database development.
The purpose of the project is to design, develop, implement and test a centralized database system in order to collect electronic pathology information from more than 100 Ontario laboratories processing tumour specimens. The project will develop a common reporting system in cancer patients using a standardized approach developed on an ORACLE database using a UNIX platform. The project proposes improvements in compliance, timeliness and quality of submission of tumour pathology information to the Ontario Cancer Registry. It will also provide efficient access to relevant information by researchers and clinicians.
