Health Canada created the Assisted Human Reproduction Implementation Office (AHRIO) within the Health Policy Branch to assist Canadians with the implementation of the Assisted Human Reproduction Act. AHRIO is developing recommendations for regulations under the Act in consultation with the provinces and territories, stakeholders, and the public at large. In addition, AHRIO advises the Minister of Health on AHR policy matters related to the Act. Assisted Human Reproduction Canada (AHRC), a federal agency responsible for administering and enforcing the AHR Act, was established in 2006. AHRIO works closely with AHRC on matters related to assisted human reproduction.
Once regulations under the AHR Act are in place, Health Canada will have an ongoing role in AHR policy. This includes maintaining the Act and regulations, assisting with the review of the AHR legislation within three years of the establishment of AHRC, advising the Minister on AHR policy matters, and working in collaboration with AHRC.
