Register Your Class

Note:

Registration to this program is restricted to Canadian elementary and secondary school teachers and must be completed by November 1st.

A poster, letter, and registration card will be sent to all elementary and secondary schools across Canada in September. The poster provides students with information on the UV index and outlines precautions they should take to protect themselves from excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

  1. Registering their class on-line or via the mail-back registration card to receive a UV Index Sun Awareness Program kit. Each kit contains a teacher's guidebook, UV index meter, UV detection beads, sun-sensitive paper, instruction and activity sheets, and a mail-back teacher evaluation form. The guidebook provides innovative, easy and fun activities that teachers can follow to teach students about UV, its impact on human health, and how to practice sun safety. Use the meter to measure the UV index levels at your school and compare them with other schools across Canada via Next link will take you to another Web site Environment Canada's UV index database or to the Next link will take you to another Web site reported UV index in your area. Measure the effectiveness of certain types of UV protection (sunscreens, sunglasses, etc) using the UV detection beads or sun-sensitive paper. Cord and instructions are also provided so that the students can form take-home bracelets. Tell us what you think about the new materials by filling out the voluntary evaluation form.
  2. Teaching students about the importance of sun safety and promoting sun protection measures in their school.
  3. Adopting a sun savvy school policy and holding a sun safety event or assembly.

To register your class to the program, please complete the following form. The personal information you provide is collected by Health Canada in order to send you a UV index kit and survey by mail. This personal information is protected under the Federal Privacy Act. Accordingly, it will be used, retained and disclosed for the purpose mentioned above and will be kept for a period of one year.
