Through on board and off board inspections, Health Canada protects public health by ensuring safety practices are in place for the provision of safe food, water and other environmental health conditions aboard its trains.

Complete sanitation inspections are done a minimum of twice a year on each passenger train route and in employee service centres. The inspection is an announced visit in peak season and an unannounced visit during non-peak season.

The rating's standards have been developed based on a combination of:

  • North American government regulatory agencies' accepted food codes and guides;
  • potential risk for spreading communicable disease;
  • operating procedures, practices, and industry norms that have been established over the years, and
  • Health Canada's experience with passenger trains over the past twenty years.
